Fronted by an unassuming singer-guitarist with a drawling style not a million serpents' kisses away from Peter Perrett, The Unbelievers' set is a strident collection of driving power chords and cutting guitar melodies.
The lead singer rocks back and forth, one leg in front of the other, adopting a pose more suited to a tug of war team but still managing to elevate the songs in the places that count. Attention is immediately drawn to 'Insight' with its insistent guitar breaks and a hook strong enough to bowl over the most sceptical of unbelievers remaining in the crowd.
With songs like these The Unbelievers can surely kick ass as they show during the closing 'Speeding Confusion' where the MC5 clashes with the M25, resulting in a glorious finale of psychotic wailing guitars.
With a bit of provocation The Unbelievers could be well up there with the Snuffs and Mega City Fours' of this world.............Rockford Sounds January 27th 1990.
